On the afternoon of March 27, 2023, at the invitation of the School of Management, Associate Professor Wang Yu from the Business School of Southern University of Science and Technology delivered an academic report entitled Divide and Conquer: A Hygienic, Efficient, and Reliable Assembly Line for Housekeeping. The report was hosted by Professor Hong Zhaofu and attended by faculty members and graduate students of the School of Management.

Associate Professor Wang Yu first introduced the potential channels for disease transmission between successive guests in hotel rooms. In the process of hotel room service, inadequate room cleaning may lead to the spread of respiratory infections, skin diseases and other illnesses, making it imperative to improve hotel room service management methods. Then, based on the analysis of service time distribution of each room service operation step using data collected from the practices of hundreds of hotel rooms, he proposed an optimization model to improve room service. Specifically, the model was applied to reasonably allocate room cleaning steps to enhance hotel room service quality. Finally, pilot tests verified that the assembly line housekeeping management process not only significantly improved hygiene standards, but also remarkably boosted labor efficiency and service quality. In addition, this assembly line housekeeping management process also provided management insights for restaurants and other service industries.

After the report, Associate Professor Wang Yu conducted in-depth exchanges with teachers and students on the problem formulation, model construction, implementation suggestions and practical significance of the research. Professor Hong Zhaofu made a brief summary of the report. This academic report provided an important learning and exchange opportunity for the faculty and students of the school to understand the cutting-edge research in the field of operations management.
