To steadily advance the "Three Ones" practical education program for cultivating chief engineer-oriented talents, the School of Management organized 119 undergraduate students from the Classes of 2024 and 2025 to embark on a two-day red educational tour in Yan’an, the sacred revolutionary site, from September 20 to 21. They took the special red study tour train "To Yan’an · A Pilgrimage of Shaanxi Students to the Sacred Revolutionary Site". The tour brought vivid history to life from textbooks, inspiring the students’ patriotic enthusiasm and sense of national identity.

The Red Special Train Travels with Songs, the Youthful Journey Reaches the Original Aspiration

In the early morning of September 20, the students departed from Chang’an Campus for Xi’an Railway Station to board the red special train, officially kicking off the red educational tour. Along the way, the carriage was filled with a warm atmosphere. The students sang China in the Lights in unison to express their deep blessings to the motherland. Bao Yuxin and Zhou Qi, undergraduates from the Class of 2025, vividly recounted the historical story of the Great Production Campaign in Nanniwan, revisiting the extraordinary years of "self-reliance and ample food and clothing". Amid passionate singing and touching stories, the train arrived at Yan’an, the sacred revolutionary site.

Reflecting on the Extraordinary Years, Patriotism Touches the Heart

Upon arriving in Yan’an in the afternoon, the students first visited the Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Hall. Precious historical photos, documents and revolutionary relics in the hall vividly demonstrated the extraordinary years when the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries led the Chinese people in heroic struggles in Yan’an and the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. The students stopped in front of pictures to listen to explanations, gazed at cultural relics and read annotations, and earnestly comprehended the historical journey of the Communist Party of China leading the Chinese people to final victory in the revolution under extremely difficult conditions.

Subsequently, the students visited the Former Site of Wangjiaping, touring the former residences of Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Peng Dehuai and other older generation revolutionaries. The narrator affectionately told of the profound bond between the leaders and the people. An on-site teaching session titled Mao Zedong and Mao Anying’s Patriotism and Family Devotion further enabled the students to deeply understand the lofty realm of revolutionary leaders who closely linked their personal destinies to the future of the country. All stated that they would turn this timeless spiritual inheritance into motivation for growth and resolve to contribute to the construction of a strong country and the rejuvenation of the nation.

Affection Amid War Recreated on Stage, Yan’an Spirit Forever in Hearts

In the evening, all teachers and students watched the red song and dance historical drama Yan’an Nursery. Based on the real history of Yan’an Nursery during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the drama depicted the touching story of nursery workers protecting revolutionary descendants amid the flames of war.

After the performance, Liu Ni, curator of the Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Hall, delivered a special lecture titled The Spirit of the War of Resistance in Songs. Combining the drama plot with detailed historical materials, she explained the historical background of Yan’an Nursery, interpreted the core connotation of the Yan’an Spirit, pointed out its contemporary value, and guided the students to draw motivation from it.

Seeking Roots at Former Sites to Understand Original Aspiration, Songs Forge Soul to Continue Glory

On September 21, the students visited the Former Site of Lu Xun Literature and Art University, Zaoyuan and the Yan’an Literature and Art Memorial Hall. At the Former Site of Lu Xun Literature and Art University, they toured the auditorium, the venue of the Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee, and the cave dwellings where Xian Xinghai, Hua Junwu and other older generation artists once lived, gaining a deeper understanding of red literature and art culture.

In Zaoyuan, the students visited the simple former residences of Zhou Enlai, Wang Jiaxiang and other older generation revolutionaries. It was in this compound that the Party Central Committee led the Rectification Movement, prepared for the Seventh National Congress, and witnessed the crucial process leading to the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Through on-site visits and explanations, everyone deeply appreciated the feelings and ideals upheld by revolutionary leaders in difficult years.

At the Yan’an Literature and Art Memorial Hall, the students viewed a large number of precious historical materials and attended a special lecture titled The Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee That Changed the Fate of China. They gained a thorough understanding of the great significance of the session in unifying the thinking of the whole Party, establishing Mao Zedong’s leadership position and promoting the Sinicization of Marxism, and deepened their understanding of the Party’s historical development and theoretical innovation. At the end of the event, all students stood solemnly and sang The Yellow River Cantata in unison. The passionate and majestic melody echoed in the memorial hall, as if bringing everyone back to the war-torn era, drawing a successful conclusion to the red educational tour.

Practical Reflections

Hu Xie, Undergraduate from the Class of 2024: The two-day trip to Yan’an was a spiritual baptism and ideological sublimation. When I headed back and looked back at this yellow land, what I had was not only photos and memories, but also inner strength and faith. The Yan’an Spirit will guide us forward like a beacon, reminding young people not to forget their original aspiration in any era. As a student of Northwestern Polytechnical University in the new era, nurtured by the "chief engineer-oriented talent cultivation culture", we will surely turn the spiritual strength drawn from the Yan’an trip into down-to-earth motivation, strive to grow into leading talents with professional expertise, systematic thinking, practical focus and responsibility, and contribute youthful strength to the realization of national rejuvenation.

Ye Zhiyang, Undergraduate from the Class of 2024: My soul longs for the red land of Yan’an. Stepping on this yellow land, every scene seems to echo the voice of history. The two-day tour was not only a meeting of time and space, but also a spiritual baptism. As a student of Northwestern Polytechnical University in the new era, we will surely integrate the great spiritual strength drawn from this trip into future study and life, integrate personal ideals into national needs, reach for the sky and live up to our youth!

Li Chaofan, Undergraduate from the Class of 2025: In Yan’an, my spirit "returned home". This land allowed me to find the source of strength, clarify the direction forward and continue the red bloodline. From now on, the Yan’an Spirit will always inspire me and guide me to forge ahead on the journey of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Yan’an — this red land soaked with the blood and unyielding will of our predecessors — carries a spiritual torch that will shine brightly and forever through generations.

Huang Yantao, Undergraduate from the Class of 2025: Today, the Yanhe River still flows gently. At the foot of Pagoda Hill, children run and play, and the elderly sit and chat. Those stories deeply rooted in years have grown into towering pine and cypress trees, echoing endlessly in the wind. The modern city of Yan’an and revolutionary sites complement each other, showing a profound dialogue between history and reality and a harmonious resonance between inheritance and development. This trip allowed me to find an everlasting beacon in the long river of history, reminding us young people not to forget where we came from and where we are going — to integrate personal ideals into the mountains, rivers and seas of the motherland, never slackening despite distance and never fearing despite hardships!
