Recently, the "INFORMS Journal on Computing" published online the research findings of "Exact MILP Models for Redundancy Allocation with Mixed Components" by Feng Jianguang, an associate professor at the School of Management, Northwestern Polytechnical University. Feng Jianguang, an associate professor at the School of Management, is the first author of the paper, and Professor Che Ada is the corresponding author. This research focuses on the Redundancy Allocation Problem (RAP) in system design, which aims to maximize system reliability by reasonably allocating redundant components under limited resources. This study proposes a stepwise linearization method for nonlinear reliability functions in scenarios involving heterogeneous components and complex structures, constructs multiple exact Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) models, and significantly reduces the number of decision variables and constraints in the models through a tree-like structure representation. The computational results demonstrate the efficient solving performance of the developed models and methods, especially in large-scale complex systems, showing robustness and scalability, and significantly outperforming existing branch-and-bound methods.
"INFORMS Journal on Computing" is the official journal of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), and is considered a top-tier journal in the field of operations research and optimization. It is also one of the top 24 academic journals selected by the University of Texas at Dallas for business schools (referred to as UTD24).
