SOM held a Pre-job Symposium for Newly-identified Graduate Student Supervisors in 2025

To further strengthen the construction of the postgraduate tutor team, standardize the guidance behavior of postgraduate tutors, reinforce the responsibility of tutors in fostering students' moral character, and enhance the awareness of tutor's job responsibility, the School of Management held a pre-job conversation symposium for newly recognized postgraduate tutors in 2025 on the afternoon of October 23. Zhang Shuang, the Party Secretary of the School, Wang Haixiao, the Deputy Party Secretary, Hong Zhaofu, the Assistant Dean, Professor Zhao Songzheng and Professor Chang Yu, representatives of senior tutors, as well as the newly recognized postgraduate tutors of this year, attended the symposium. The meeting was chaired by Hong Zhaofu, the Assistant Dean.

At the beginning of the meeting, Hong Zhaofu led the participants to study the spirit of the document "Work Measures for Pre-job Talks with Graduate Supervisors at Northwestern Polytechnical University". He explained the requirements for supervisor positions, basic qualities of supervisors, responsibilities of supervisors in fostering virtue and educating students, rights of supervisors, incentives, and exit mechanisms. He also emphasized the core requirements for supervisors as the primary responsible party for graduate student cultivation. Professor Zhao Songzheng, drawing from years of experience in educating students, shared his insights and experiences in guiding students under the theme of "Becoming a 'Four Good' Teacher". He also had in-depth discussions with young teachers on how to enhance their guidance abilities, establish good mentoring relationships, and assist graduate students in growing and succeeding. Professor Chang Yu emphasized in his speech that supervisors should continuously strengthen their own professional ethics and conduct, adhere to setting examples, strictly adhere to principles and bottom lines, and also pay attention to humanistic care for students. Following this, newly recognized graduate supervisors of the year made exchange speeches. The supervisors expressed their commitment to thoroughly implementing the party's educational policies, conducting rigorous scholarship, always keeping in mind the bottom-line requirements for the guidance behavior of graduate supervisors, and focusing on fostering virtue and educating students. They aim to integrate the improvement of students' academic abilities with their overall growth, ultimately promoting the coordinated development of the tripartite interest community of students, supervisors, and the school.

Subsequently, Deputy Secretary Wang Haixiao, on behalf of the college, congratulated the newly recognized supervisors and engaged in in-depth discussions with them, focusing on key areas such as the contradiction between teaching and learning, ideological and political education of graduate students, and their mental health. He reminded the supervisors to fully implement the requirement of being the "first responsible person," to strengthen the ideological and political defense line of graduate students, and to pay close attention to their physical and mental health. At the same time, they should strive to build a harmonious and amicable relationship between teaching and learning, resolve contradictions in a timely manner through effective communication, and ensure the smooth progress of talent cultivation. In his concluding speech, Secretary Zhang Shuang put forward several suggestions for everyone to share: First, we should benchmark ourselves against the "Four Good Teachers" and take the mission of educating students as the core, guiding students both academically and ideologically. Second, we should inherit the excellent culture of our college, learn from the experiences of sister colleges, and draw on each other's strengths to enhance the level of education. Third, we should remember the entrustment and shoulder our responsibilities, turning educational expectations into practical guiding actions. Fourth, we should adhere to the principle of mutual progress in teaching and learning, working together to achieve new achievements in the growth of supervisors, the success of students, and the development of the college.

After the symposium, Zhang Shuang signed the mentor responsibility agreement with the newly recognized graduate mentors of this year, presented appointment letters to the newly recognized mentors, and took a group photo as a souvenir.

This pre-job conversation symposium helped new mentors clarify their job responsibilities and educational mission, provided clear guidance and strong support for the subsequent work, and laid a solid foundation for promoting the professionalization of our college's mentor team and cultivating high-level talents that meet the development needs of the new era.
