To further guide the 2023 freshmen in adapting to campus life, the School of Management held a mental adaptation lecture at Lituo Lecture Hall at 16:00 on the afternoon of October 14, 2023. Teacher Zhao Qing from the School of Foreign Languages was invited to give the lecture, which was presided over by Yuan Yuan, the college’s coordinator for mental health work.

At the beginning of the lecture, Teacher Zhao Qing pointed out that the students were starting a new stage of life and encountering many new things. She invited everyone to compare the differences between university and senior high school and discuss possible difficulties and challenges. The students responded actively. Some mentioned that “unlike senior high school, university offers more freedom in time management without constant supervision from teachers and parents, so we need to learn to plan our time properly”. Others said that “after entering university, it is necessary to get along well with others, whether in dormitories, classes or clubs”. Teacher Zhao affirmed these views and further noted that university life is rich and colorful, with various competitions and cultural activities, but students may also face difficulties such as lifestyle differences, academic pressure and emotional problems. Therefore, it is crucial to learn to adapt and maintain mental health.

Next, Teacher Zhao interpreted the freshmen mental health assessment report. She explained the meaning of each psychological indicator with specific examples. She reminded the students that everyone’s psychological state is dynamic and may change with recent events. When viewing the results, they should neither over-worry nor avoid them, but face them rationally and positively. True health means having the ability to cope with and solve problems, rather than having no problems at all.

Then, Teacher Zhao explained the possible maladjustment and adjustment methods for freshmen adapting to the new environment. She introduced the four stages of adaptation: excitement, sensitivity, adjustment and integration, and elaborated on the symptoms of maladjustment. She encouraged the students to respond positively to psychological problems, reframe their cognition from a different perspective, and seek support when necessary.

Finally, Teacher Zhao introduced the university’s peer support resources and encouraged students to make use of on-campus and peer support when in need. She also provided the online and offline contact information of the University Mental Health Education Center.

Focusing on the results of psychological assessment, common psychological puzzles in the university adaptation period and corresponding adjustment methods, this lecture guided the 2023 freshmen to complete their identity transformation as soon as possible and integrate into campus study and life. It provided a sound start for their university career, helping them understand themselves better, face the future positively, and devote themselves to study and life with a more energetic state.
